“La Forteresse” and “La mère” win award in Buenos Aires

06.04.2009

The film “La Forteresse” by filmmaker Fernand Melgar and “La mère” by Antojne Cattin & Pawel Kostomarov were awarded an Honourable Mention by the jury in the “Human Rights” competition at the 11th BAFICI Festival in Buenos Aires (March 25 - April 5, 2009). Thirteen films from all over the world had participated in the competition.
The BAFICI in Buenos Aires ranks as one of the best worldwide among independent film festivals. Argentinean film critic and director Sergio Wolf is in charge of the rather rigorous selection of films for the festival, which focuses primarily on innovative, bold and committed international film productions. With over 200,000 visitors, however, the festival has maintained a moderate level of popular success.

The recognition of the documentary film “La forteresse” – winner of the Golden Leopard in the “Filmmakers of the Present” competition at last year’s film festival in Locarno – has also been confirmed by ticket sales in cinemas: more than 40,000 people have already seen the film in cinemas in Switzerland.

The film’s social relevance and Fernand Melgar’s sensitivity in dealing with the topic have gained a great deal of international attention for the film: “La forteresse” has been well received at festivals in Vienna, Seville and Montreal. While it was honoured with the Grand Prix in Teheran and in Montreal, it won the Audience Award and an Honourable Mention for the editing of the film in Florence.
