After recently winning the “Golden Dove” in Leipzig, Germany, and the 2003 Swiss Film Prize, among other awards, and having had a successful theatrical release in Switzerland (over 40,000 tickets sold), Erich Langjahr’s “Shepherds’ Journey into the Third Millenium” is receiving interest and attention in larger reaches of the globe as well. As part of a retrospective of his work at the Festival Figueira da Foz (Portugal), organized by Pro Helvetia, Erich Langjahr is presenting his film trilogy based around the theme of core human values. In addition, Japanese audiences will be able to discover “Shepherds’ Journey” this fall at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival and at the Osaka European Film Festival.
Film critics and festival officials have recognized and stressed the universality of Langjahr’s film language even in his earlier works – with “Ex Voto” and “Männer im Ring” for example, shown this year in Figueira da Foz (September 7 – 14). In Japan, Langjahr has also been previously recognized for his films. The Yamagata Film Festival (October 10 – 16), the most renowned documentary film festival in Asia, invited him earlier in 1997 to screen the first part of his trilogy, “Alpine Ballade”. “Shepherd’s Journey into the Third Millenium”, with Japanese subtitles specifically produced for Japanese audiences, will also be shown at the 10th European Film Festival in Osaka (November 15-24), an event with much reputation, where, in 2002, Swiss filmmaker Christian Frei participated with his documentary film “War Photographer”.

As for Switzerland, “Shepherd’s Journey” has been crossing language barriers as well: In October, the film will be shown in movie theatres in the Ticino with Italian subtitles, and at the end of October, it will have its premiere in Geneva and other cities in the Romandie, the French speaking part of Switzerland.
