Since August 2011 the Alain Tanner retrospective, which has been touring Latin America with tremendous success, will conclude in Mexico City (January 12-27). With cinematographer Renato Berta in attendance, the Cineteca Nacional de México and the French Institut IFAL will present the 15-film programme, initiated by SWISS FILMS.

The homage to the Genevan doyen will open with "Charles mort ou vif" (1969). Alain Tanner shot this masterpiece with Renato Berta, as well as others including "La Salamandre" (1971), "Jonas qui aura 25 ans en l'an 2000" (1976) and "Messidor" (1979). Renato Berta will attend the film screening as a guest and give a Masters class. The original versions of the films will be screened with Spanish subtitles.

The retrospective has attracted a great deal of interest in Argentina, Uruguay and Ecuador: in Buenos Aires some 3,000 viewers thronged the screenings of the Tanner films, which also celebrated a revival in the media. More than 1,800 viewers attended the retrospective in Montevideo, where Swiss director Jacob Berger presented his short film "Je pense à Alain Tanner." In Quito Alain Tanner's films drew 2,280 viewers to the Cineteca Nazionale.

In conjunction with the tour in Latin America, SWISS FILMS published a Spanish version of the Alain Tanner monograph on its website www.swissfilms.ch, which is also available in German, French and English.
