Montreal celebrates Georges Schwizgebel – figurehead of Swiss animated film-making

07.10.2008

A retrospective of the 37th Festival du Nouveau Cinéma – held in Montreal between 8 and 19 October – is being dedicated to 64-year-old Georges Schwizgebel. As a partnership with the Cinémathèque Québécoise, the Canadian National Film Board (NFB) and SWISS FILMS, Montreal’s second-largest film festival – dedicated to films written and directed by the same person – is presenting the complete works of the West Swiss film artist, entitled “Georges Schwizgebel: le vertige au bout du pinceau”.
Georges Schwizgebel has realised no less than 15 films – whose entire length corresponds to that of a long cinema film – over his career, spanning almost 35 years. His animation technique, characterised by the use of gouache colours, and the brilliantly transforming sequences of shots form the inimitable style of the master of cartoon films. His last-but-one work, created in cooperation with the NFB and entitled “Play”, has been shown at countless festivals, receiving awards. His last oeuvre “Retouches” – also a co-production with the NFB – premièred at the Festival Locarno in August. In the presence of Georges Schwizgebel, his films will be shown on 15 October to the audience in the Main Hall of the Cinémathèque Québécoise.

On the occasion of the 37th Festival du Nouveau Cinéma, both of the films co-produced in Switzerland and premièred in Cannes are up for the “Louve d'Or” award: “Salt Of This Sea” by Annemarie Jacir (co-production: Thelma Film, Zurich) and “Tulpan” by Sergei Dvortsevoy (co-production: Cobra Film, Zurich).
