Munich 2003: Three Swiss documentary films in competition

22.04.2003

Swiss documentary film production will have a prominent position at the 18th International Documentary Film Festival in Munich, Germany, from May 3-10, 2003. Three of the fifteen films in competition were made in Switzerland: “Elisabeth Kübler-Ross – Dem Tod ins Gesicht sehen” by Stefan Haupt, “Forget Baghdad” by Samir, and “Hirtenreise ins Dritte Jahrtausend” by Erich Langjahr. They will be vying for the main prize of 10,000 Euros awarded by the Bavarian Broadcast Corporation (Bayrischer Rundfunk). In the International Series, the films “Mutter” by Miklós Gimes and “Der Komplex” by Fabienne Boesch will be shown as well.
For the first time, the documentary film on Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, the Swiss researcher of death and dying, will be presented at an international film festival. With already 60,000 tickets sold in Switzerland, the theatrical release of this film has been extraordinarily successful.

Besides similar events in Leipzig and Duisburg, the Munich International Documentary Film Festival is one of the most important platforms for documentary film in the German-speaking countries in Europe. Under the direction of Munich film researcher Hermann Barth, Swiss documentary production has received considerable attention from the festival organizers. Swiss filmmakers have been regularly invited to the competition in Munich, as evidenced by this year’s presence as well as Edgar Hagen’s film “Zeit der Titanen” that was screened at at last year’s event.
