Prelude to the Swiss Film Prize 2002: Nominations

The Swiss Film Prize, which was initiated in 1998, honours exceptional achievements in acting and filmmaking and is awarded annually in January in Solothurn, Switzerland. Within only a few years it has won recognition in the world of Swiss Film and gained more and more attention nationally, as well as internationally. Among the winners of this prize have been films by renowned filmmakers such as Léa Pool, Marcel Gisler, Clemens Klopfenstein, Jacqueline Veuve, and Samir, as well as works by up-and-coming talents such as Stina Werenfels and Esen Isik. The awards for "Best Actress" and "Best Actor" have become a permanent feature of the Swiss Film Prize since 2000. Bruno Ganz, Sabine Timoteo, Delphine Lanza and Stefan Suske are the previous winners in this category.
Announcing the nominations for the Swiss Film Prize 2002 affirms which films, and which actresses and actors, have been submitted by the sponsoring organisations for awards in the five different categories of "Best Actress" and "Best Actor", "Best Fiction Film", "Best Documentary Film" and "Best Short Film". The jury, presided over by Geraldine Chaplin, will select the winners of the prize from the nominations. The sum of the film prizes amounts to a total of CHF 150,000.
Nominated for the Swiss Film Prize, which will be awarded for the fifth time, for the category of "Best Fiction Film" are: «Eloge de l’amour» by Jean-Luc Godard, «Escape to Paradise» by Nino Jacusso, «Happiness Is a Warm Gun» by Thomas Imbach, «Stille Liebe» by Christoph Schaub and «Utopia Blues» by Stefan Haupt. A sum of CHF 50,000 is allocated for this category. Nominated for the category of "Best Documentary Film", for which another sum of CHF 50,000 is allocated, are: «117 Police Secours» by Raphaël Sibilla, «Bashkim» by Vadim Jendreyko, «Venus Boyz» by Gabriel Baur, «War Photographer» by Christian Frei and «Yugodivas» by Andrea Staka. The films submitted for the "Best Short Film" prize, which is set at CHF 20,000, are: «Die Wurstverkäuferin» by Oliver Paulus and Stefan Hillebrand, «Einspruch II» by Rolando Colla, «La jeune fille et les nuages» by Georges Schwizgebel, «Reise ohne Rückkehr» by Esen Isik and «Tous à table» by Ursula Meier. Up for nomination are those films which have been screened at major film festivals in Switzerland and abroad or in cinemas this past year.

The "Best Actress" and "Best Actor" awards recognise exceptional artistic merits achieved by an actress or actor, either of Swiss nationality or residing permanently in Switzerland. A sum of CHF 15,000 is allocated for each these awards. The nominees for "Best Actress" are: Sibylle Canonica for her role as Frida the restaurant owner in «3 Sterne» («Mostly Martha») (Director: Sandra Nettelbeck), Linda Olsansky as Petra in «Happiness Is a Warm Gun» (Director: Thomas Imbach) and Andrea Guyer together with Carol Schuler, the two sisters Babs and Tina Vonlanthen, in «Lieber Brad» (Director: Lutz Konermann). The nominees for "Best Actor" are: Michael Finger as Rafael in «Utopia Blues» (Director: Stefan Haupt), Julien George for his role as Mathieu in «Potlatch» (Director: Pierre Maillard) and Mathias Gnädinger for his role as the father in «Lieber Brad» (Director: Lutz Konermann). Swissperform (Swiss actors' rights society) also participated in determining the nominees for this category. Interest in the nominations has increased steadily since the inception of the film prize. Late autumn of each year is met with anticipation and speculation within the film scene - who will or will not make it this year. The nomination for the Swiss Film Prize is now considered a stamp of quality approval.

The initiators and sponsoring organisations of the Swiss Film Prize are the Federal Office for Culture, the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG SSR idée suisse), the Solothurn Film Festival, the Nyon Documentary Film Festival "Visions du Réel", the Locarno International Film Festival, and the Swiss Film Center, in collaboration with the Swiss Short Film Agency.

The prizes will be awarded by a 6-member jury on Wednesday, 16. January 2002, in connection with the Solothurn Film Festival. The members of the jury, presided over by Geraldine Chaplin, include film producer Tiziana Soudani from Ticino («Pane e tulipani»), Matthias von Gunten, film director («Ein Zufall im Paradies») and new President of the Swiss Filmmakers' Association, Florence Heiniger, journalist and producer of "Faxculture»/TSR", the Genevan art historian Erika Deuber Ziegler, as well as film academic and journalist Vinzenz Hediger.
