The Swiss documentary film “Retour à Gorée” (producer: CAB Production, Lausanne) won the Audience Award at the 9th “Festival du Cinéma Européen en Essonne” (November 9 – 24, 2007). Pierre-Yves Borgeaud, the director of the film, was present at the festival to receive the award personally in Montgeron on Saturday, November 24. The prize, amounting to 5,000 euros, also serves to promote the distribution of the film in France.
Twelve feature-length fiction and documentary films, as well as 35 short films from throughout all of Europe, were screened in the festival competition, which was held in eleven cinemas in the Département Essonne near Paris. Switzerland was further represented, together with the documentary film “Retour à Gorée”, by the two short animation films “Jeu” by Georges Schwizgebel and “Banquise” by Claude Barras and Cédric Louis, as well as by Frédéric Mermoud’s short film “Rachel”.

“Retour à Gorée” will be screened in French cinemas at the end of February 2008, for which Hevadis, the film’s distribution company in France, will receive financial support from SWISS FILMS. On November 29, Pierre-Yves Borgeaud will present his film at the African Diaspora Film Festival in New York. The film, which tells of Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour’s epic journey as he traces the footsteps of Africa’s slaves, will be released in cinemas in France, Japan, the USA and England at the beginning of 2008.
