Ursula Meier’s “Sister” is among the five films nominated for Best international Film of the Independent Spirit Awards 2013. The Spirit Awards honour artist-driven independent filmmaking and are presented immediately before the Oscars.

Ursula Meier’s film “Sister,” Switzerland’s candidate for an Academy Award in the category of Best Foreign Film, is also in the running for an Independent Spirit Award. The film, coproduced by Vega Film in Zurich and Archipel35 in France, is competing against four other films: “Amour” by Austrian director Michael Haneke; “De rouille et d’os” by French director Jacques Audiard; “Once Upon A Time in Anatolia” by Turkish director Nuri Bilge Ceylan; and “Rebelle” by Canadian director Kim Nguyen.

Hollywood’s Alternative award for low-budget productions
The Spirit Awards are Hollywood’s alternative awards for film productions whose costs do not exceed 20 million dollars. Independent filmmakers and film lovers view the films, nominated in 14 categories, in Los Angeles or New York in January and vote on the winners. The Spirit Awards will be presented this year on February 23, 2013, one day before the Oscars in Santa Monica.
