Strong presence for Swiss short films in Hamburg

28.05.2009

Twelve Swiss short films will be screened in the programme of the 25th Hamburg International Short Film Festival (June 2-8, 2009). More than half of these – three fiction and four animation films – will participate in the competitions: with “L'élan” by Alexia Walther and Maxime Matray in the International Competition; Michael Koch’s graduation film “Polar” (a German-Swiss coproduction) in the German Competition; and four Swiss animation films in the competition of the 11th Mo & Friese Children’s Short Film Festival, a parallel festival which runs from June 1-7, 2009. In addition, the Swiss film “Auf Deutsch! Merci!” by Boris Beerläuft will be screened in the Three-Minute Quickie Competition, whose theme this year is mishaps and failure.
The four animation films in the children’s “Mo & Friese” competition are all graduate films from the Lucerne School of Art and Design (HSLU): “Grosse Pläne” by Irmgard Walthert; “Me And My Monster” by Claudia Röthlin; “Signalis” by Adrian Flückiger; and “The Bellringer” by Dustin Rees. Except for Dustin Rees, all of the filmmakers will attend the festival, thanks to support by SWISS FILMS.

Five further Swiss film productions will be screened in the festival’s special programmes: “Nicolae & Elena” (1991) by Richard Vetterli will be presented in the “Best of 25 - Award-Winning Films from 25 Years of Festival History” programme; the four films “S’Nöchschtmol” (2003) by Lawrence Grimm, “La difference” (1999) by Rita Küng, “La défoule” (1995) by Séverine Leibundgut and “Hoi Maya” (2004) by Claudia Lorenz will be screened in the “20th Anniversary of the Hamburg International Lesbian and Gay Film Festival” programme.

The short film festival Hamburg is, together with Oberhausen, one of the most important festivals for the short film genre in Germany. This year’s edition of the festival will present 400 films from over 40 countries.
