The documentary film “An African Election”, a Swiss-American coproduction by Jarreth Merz, will be screened in competition at the 27th Sundance Film Festival, in Park City and Salt Lake City, the capital city of Utah, (January 20-30, 2011). Swiss documentary filmmaking thus continues to be present at the festival founded by Robert Redford. Last year Swiss documentary filmmaker Christian Frei was honoured with the World Cinema Directing Award.

"An African Election" follows the 2008 presidential elections in the small African country of Ghana, where director Jarreth Merz, born in Zurich in 1970, grew up. Contrary to recent events on the Ivory Coast and despite a fervent election campaign, the losing candidate acknowledged his defeat in seeking the presidency and extended his hand to his opponent. Because Jarreth Merz had access to both political factions as a director, his compelling portrayal provides insight into the election campaign, albeit scarcely noticed by the international public, and the victory for democracy. The film is a coproduction by Amka Film in Ticino and the Italian Swiss Broadcasting Service (TSI). It was already screened at the end of 2010 at the IDFA International Documentary Film Festival in Amsterdam.
