Swiss cinema spanning several generations at Tofifest in Poland

Two extensive Swiss film programmes will be presented at the 7th International Film Festival Tofifest in the Polish city of Torun (June 26-July 3, 200). The programmes will provide insight into Swiss filmmaking by several generations. While one of the programmes is devoted to Alain Tanner, the second focuses on filmmakers of the New Swiss Cinema. Ursula Meier’s multi-award-winning Swiss fiction film “Home”, will be screened in the festival’s international competition and is thus in the running for the “Golden Angel” award.
The eminent Alain Tanner, who will celebrate his 80th birthday this year, is being for the first time in Poland honoured with a retrospective. It encompasses eight fiction films selected from his earlier works, beginning with “Charles mort ou vif”, and will be rounded off with Tanner’s documentary film from the 90’s “Les hommes du port” and his latest film “Paul s’en va”. The film historian Marcy Goldberg will accompany the homage.
The New Swiss Cinema panorama programme will open with “Tandoori Love” by Oliver Paulus. The programme comprises eight fiction films – including Micha Lewinski’s “Der Freund”, Jacob Berger’s “1 Journée” and Fulvio Bernasconi’s “Fuori dalle corde”, all of which provide a closer look at filmmaking from the German-, French- and Italian-speaking regions of Switzerland during the past five years. Five short films, including “Der Lauf der Dinge” by Peter Fischli and David Weiss, complete the panorama programme.
Lionel Baier (“Un autre homme”), Fulvio Bernasconi (“Fuori dalle corde”), Ursula Meier (“Home”), Stefan Hillebrand (co-author of “Tandoori Love”) and Greg Zglinski (“Tout un hiver sans feu”) will present their films personally to the audience in Torun and also participate in discussions relating to coproducing films in Europe.
The Tofifest ranks among Poland’s emerging film festivals, together with the festival in Warsaw. This year it will screen approximately 150 fiction films, many of which are Polish premieres. The Swiss presence is due to the collaboration between the Polish festival and the film promotion agency SWISS FILMS.
