Swiss documentary maker wins a prize in Venice

Director Stefano Knuchel, from Ticino, was awarded the "Bisato d’Oro" prize for best direction for his documentary film "Hugo en Afrique". The prize was awarded by an independent jury of critics on the occasion of the 66th Mostra Internazionale d’Arte Cinematografica. The prize was presented to Stefano Knuchel, accompanied by his producer Pietro Gerosa, by the famous Italian actress Maria Grazia Cucinotta on 11 September 2009.
The jury of the independent film review, headed by the film historian and film critic Dr Josef Schnelle, put forth the following arguments to justify awarding the prize to the 91-minute long documentary entitled "Hugo en Afrique": "For the ability to respectfully tell an idea of art and life. For the honesty with which – for the first time in the form of a film – the life and the fabulous world of Hugo Pratt are depicted, with which his roots are sought and with which, even without (the role model of the artist), Corto Maltese, the strong, mature personality is discovered. For the way in which Africa is depicted without a religious or ideological veil – as pure as ist sky and ist desert."*
