Swiss film gems in La Rochelle

25.06.2008

The 36th International Film Festival of La Rochelle (June 27 - July 7, 2008), devoted to forging the link between current and historical film works, is providing Swiss film directors Christian Schocher and Pierre-Yves Borgeaud with an outstanding opportunity to present their film productions from both yesterday and today.
The film “Reisender Krieger” (director’s cut) dates back to 1981 and will celebrate its international comeback in La Rochelle. The film was re-edited by Bündner director Christian Schocher, restored by Andromeda Film, a post-production firm in Zurich, and also copied on to 35mm film for the first time. This road movie, which ranks among the gems of films made in Switzerland, will be released in Swiss cinemas at the end of 2008.

The festival, in collaboration with SWISS FILMS, has invited Pierre-Yves Borgeaud to an artist’s workshop. Borgeaud represents some of the most original works from the French-speaking region of Switzerland. The workshop, which involves shooting a short film during the festival, is expected to continue throughout the entire year as an atelier for young people. Furthermore, Pierre-Yves Borgeaud’s documentary films will be screened in La Rochelle: “Inland” (2001), which portrays the music duo “Stimmhorn”, and “Retour à Gorée” (2006), featuring Senegalese singer Youssou N’Dour.

In conjunction with the homage to actor and director Jean-François Stévenin, the festival will screen the film “Des épaules solides” (2002) by Ursula Meier once again. The film had already been screened in La Rochelle in 2004 in a special programme that featured current filmmaking from the French-speaking region of Switzerland. Bernhard Uhlmann, former co-manager of the Swiss Film Archive in Lausanne, will present two films, “Lettre à Freddy Buache” by Jean-Luc Godard (1982) and “Freddy Buache, passeur du 7ème Art” by Michel Van Zele (2008), both of which are dedicated to the founder and long-standing director of Cinémathèque Suisse.
