Three Swiss film productions will be screened in competition at the 1st edition of the Panazorean Film Festival, which is held on the main island in the Portuguese Azores (April 14-21, 2012). Fernand Melgar’s multi-award-winning documentary film “Vol Spécial” is in the running for the festival’s Grand Prize, endowed with EUR 3,000, while the short films “Nuvem” (“Le poisson lune”) by Basil Da Cunha and “Down in Egyptland” by Lukas Zünd are in the running for the Onda Curta Prize. The Portuguese television channel RTP purchases the screening rights of the winning film in this category.

The festival auf the Azores is entirely devoted to the theme of migration and interculturality. The film “Vol Spécial,” which celebrated its premiere last year in Locarno and was honoured with the Swiss Film Prize “Quartz 2012” this year, has given rise to debates on the deportation of asylum-seekers, not only in Switzerland, but also in many other countries in Europe.

Basil Da Cunha’s 30-minute film “Nuvem,” screened last year in Cannes, depicts everyday life in a Creole shantytown in Lisbon. The 24-minute film “Down in Egyptland” is Lukas Zünd’s graduation film from the Polish National Film School in Lodz. The film tells the story of a Nigerian student who has moved into a student dorm in Poland and is caught between his profoundly religious background and his desire to be integrated into his new environment.
