Swiss Presence at Cannes

08.05.2003

At the 56th annual Cannes Film Festival from May 14 – 25, Switzerland is represented at the official competition with “Ce jour-là” by Raúl Ruiz, a minority co-production. In this film, two important roles are cast with the Swiss actors Jean-Luc Bideau and Jean-François Balmer, while the French-Swiss co-production was produced by Geneva director and producer Patricia Plattner (Light Night Productions).
For the first time, Switzerland occupies a place at the “Village International”, directly on the beach, where all the other countries’ pavilions are located. The “Pavillon Suisse” has been organized by the Swiss Film Center and the Locarno International Film Festival with the support of Präsenz Schweiz, Pro Helvetia, and the city of Geneva. Swiss producer Xaiver Ruiz, whose hometown is Geneva also, is participating at the “Producers on the Move” event (May 16-18) which gives young European producers a platform at the festival.
Even though Chilean-born Raúl Ruiz calls “Ce jour-là” his “helvetic film” - in reference to its story and the possibility of it occurring in Switzerland – no film made by a Swiss director was included in this year’s Cannes Film Festival, which is regarded as the most important worldwide.

At the “Marché International du Film” which plays an important role for sales of film rights and for international contacts with production partners, eight production firms are participating at the information booth sponsored by the Swiss Film Center: Amka Films Productions, Almaz Film Productions, Catpics Coproductions, Impuls Home Entertainment, Navarro Films, T&C Film, XL Production for Film & TV, and Zodiac Pictures International.

Geneva film director and producer Xavier Ruiz (“Neutre”, by Navarro Films) is the Swiss “Producer on the Move”. He and twenty other up-and-coming producers from 21 European countries are given a forum, organized by the European Film Promotion EFP, to network and to present their new film projects to possible partners and the media.

The Swiss Film Center and the production house Almaz Film Productions, Lausanne, hold a Swiss reception on Tuesday, May 20, on the beachfront of the Carlton Hotel.
