27.05.2009

The 6-minute cartoon film “Retouches” by Georges Schwizgebel is part of the international competition at the 49th Krakow Film Festival, taking place in the Polish university and cultural city from 29 May to 4 June 2009. “Ceux de la colline” by Berni Goldblat is playing in the competition for long documentary films whilst “No More Smoke Signals” by Fanny Bräuning will be shown in Krakow as an Eastern European premiere.
The Krakow Film Festival, founded in 1961, is one of the oldest European events and concentrates fully on documentary, short and cartoon films. It is recognised by the International Federation of Film Producers Associations FIAPF as one of five sector-specific festivals (category IV) alongside Bilbao, Oberhausen, St. Petersburg and Tampere. The Krakow Film Market, one of the most important sales platforms in Eastern Europe, is being held parallel to the festival from 31 May to 4 June.

The cartoon film “Retouches”, first performed in Locarno in 2008, was shown at numerous festivals last year such as Aspen, Clermont-Ferrand, Ljubljana, Montreal and Ottawa. The documentary film “Ceux de la colline“, which depicts the search for gold in Burkina Faso and the reality of the gold-digger settlements arising there, was first shown at the “Visions du Réel” film festival in Nyon. The career of “No More Smoke Signals“ – QUARTZ of the best documentary film at the Swiss Film Prize 2009 –, also began in Locarno where it was performed during the “Semaine de la Critique”.
