ALA KACHUU is nominated for an Academy Award

The Swiss short film ALA KACHUU - TAKE AND RUN by Zurich-based production company Filmgerberei is one of five nominees in the Live Action Short Film category at the 94th Academy Awards. The film tells the story of a young Kyrgyz woman who becomes the victim of a bride robbery. This nomination is an additional international success story for Swiss short filmmaking, which in the past has already received several nominations for the world's most prestigious award.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced the nominations for the 94th Academy Awards. Among the five nominees in the Live Action Short Film category is the Swiss short ALA KACHUU by Maria Brendle. The 38-minute film was produced by Nadine Lüchinger and Flavio Gerber (Filmgerberei, Zurich).

ALA KACHUU - TAKE AND RUN is set in Kyrgyzstan and tells the story of a young student who becomes a victim of bride robbery. Kidnapping and forced marriage are prohibited by law in Kyrgyzstan, but still widespread also in other regions of the world under the guise of tradition. Filming took place in the fall of 2019. Since then, the film has screened internationally at over 60 festivals and has won multiple awards.

The Oscar nomination of ALA KACHUU is one of a number of achievements for Swiss short films. In recent years, several short film garnered nominations in the prestigious Live Action Short Film category. In 2017 LA FEMME ET LE TGV by Timo von Gunten (production Giacun Caduff, arbel gmbh) was nominated, in 2015 the ZHdK graduation film PARVANEH by Talkhon Hamzavi and in 2009 Reto Caffi's short film AUF DER STRECKE. The later two films had already won a Student Academy Award.

SWISS FILMS supports and accompanies the promotion campaign of Swiss productions at the Academy Awards on behalf of the Federal Office of Culture. The 94th Academy Awards ceremony will take place in Los Angeles on March 27, 2022.
