22.08.2007

At the Palm Springs International Festival of Short Films, taking place for the 13th time from August 23 – 29, 2007, the Swiss short fiction films “Chambre 24” by Andrew Katumba, “Il neige à Marrakech” by Hicham Alhayat, “Naufrage” by Oliver Beguin, as well as the documentary film “H.R. Giger’s Sanctuary” by Nick Brandestini and Steve Ellington will be part of the competition. The festival is considered the “small brother” of the well-known Palm Springs Festival for feature length films. In addition, four short works will be presented in the international program at the 18th Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival from August 23 – September 1, 2007.
The Palm Springs ShortFest presents selected short films within various thematic programs. The award-winning film “Il neige à Marrakech” will be shown in the “It’s A Small, Small World” program and “Chambre 24” in the “True Romance” program, while “Naufrage” will be located in the context of the “The Horror, The Horror…” program. Finally, “H.R. Giger’s Sanctuary” will be presented in the “Cinema in Minima” section.

Internationally, the renowned festival is one of the most important showcases for short film in North America with its well-visited film market and over 50 film programs. Films awarded at Palm Springs automatically can be nominated for the Academy Awards.

Switzerland also has a remarkable presence at this year’s Sao Paulo International Short Film Festival. “Il neige à Marrakech” has been invited to screen at Sao Paulo as well. In addition, the important South American festival will present “Le créneau” by Frédéric Mermoud, which was previously screened at the International Critics Week at the Cannes Film Festival. “The Little Samurai” by Lorenz Merz will also have its first international appearance. Lorenz’ film already received an honorable mention at this year’s Locarno International Film Festival. Lastly, Swiss animated filmmaking will be represented in Sao Paulo with the masterpiece “Jeu/Play” by Georges Schwizgebel.
