Ten Swiss films screened in Leipzig

22.10.2008

Switzerland is present with ten films at the 51st International Leipzig Festival for Documentary and Animated Film (October 27-November 2, 2008). An animation film and a short documentary film are in the running for Golden Doves: Georges Schwizgebel’s “Retouches” in the International Competition and Anja Schwyzer’s “Nebenlauf” in the Young Talent Competition. Moreover, the screening of three new and two other documentary films at this largest film festival for artistic documentary and animated films in Germany attests to the exceptional quality and diversity of Swiss film productions in this genre.

Three documentary films for the cinema which celebrated their premieres at this year’s “Cinéma du reel” Festival in Paris and at the “Vision du reel” Festival in Nyon – “Glorious Exit” by Kevin Merz; “Nomad’s Land” by Gaël Métroz; and “Unwanted Witness” by Juan José Lozano – will be screened in the international programme. In addition, Peter Liechti’s “Lucky Jack – Three Attempts to Stop Smoking” (2003) will be presented in the “Smoking(No)Smoking?” series, and Joakim Demmer’s film “Tarifa Traffic. Death in the Straits of Gibraltar” (2003), co-produced by Dschoint Ventschr in Zurich, will be screened in the “Best of TV” programme.

Three short animation films – “The Bear's Hand” by Marina Rosset; “Sainte Barbe” by Cédric Louis and Claude Barras; and “Tôt ou tard” by Jadwiga Kowalska – will be presented in the „Anima für Kinder” series.

The Leipzig Festival, whose tradition has been to establish ties between Western and Eastern Europe, has evolved into one of the most important platforms in German-speaking countries with its market for documentary films. SWISS FILMS will be presenting ten further new Swiss documentary films at the Leipzig film market and has organised a reception for guests attending the market.
