Swiss actress Ella Rumpf will be honoured as a Shooting Star at the 70th Berlinale in February. She attracted a great deal of attention with her intensive performance in the award-winning Swiss film CHRIEG in 2014 and starred in THE DIVINE ORDER by Petra Volpe. Equally impressive were her performances in such European productions as GRAVE by Julia Ducournau and TIGER GIRL by Jakob Lass. Every year at the Berlinale, the European Film Promotion EFP presents the Shooting Stars Award to Europe’s ten most talented young actors and actresses.

Ella Rumpf was born in 1995 in Paris and grew up in Zurich. She made her acting debut in Friederike Jehn’s feature film DRAUSSEN IST SOMMER in 2012. At the age of 19, she was cast in Simon Jaquemet’s feature-film debut CHRIEG. She attracted a great deal of national and international attention in her role as the rebellious, androgynous Ali, which garnered her a nomination for the Swiss Film Award. Ella Rumpf subsequently completed her acting studies at the Giles Foreman Centre for Acting in London and currently lives in Paris.

From Cannes to a European career
Ella Rumpf made her international debut at the Festival de Cannes in 2017 in GRAVE, the cannibalistic horror thriller by Julia Ducournau, a role for which she was selected as a promising up-and-coming talent in Révélations for the French film award César. Since then, the multilingual actress has performed in a wide variety of films, such as the eponymic protagonist in the German film TIGER GIRL by Jakob Lass, which premiered at the Berlinale, as well as in Detlef Buck’s ASPHALTGORILLAS and in the French-Canadian-Belgian coproduction SYMPATHY FOR THE DEVIL by Guillaume de Fontenay in 2019. We can look forward to Ella Rumpf’s next roles in FREUD, the Netflix period-based series, and BEAST, the Swiss feature film by Lorenz Merz.

Ten European Shooting Stars
Together with Ella Rumpf, the following actresses and actors were chosen as Shootings Stars: Martina Apostolova (Bulgaria), Bartosz Bielenia (Poland), Jonas Dassler (Germany), Levan Gelbakhiani (Georgia), Zita Hanrot (France), Pääru Oja (Estonia), Joana Ribeiro (Portugal), Victoria Carmen Sonne (Denmark), Bilal Wahib (Netherlands)

During the 70th Berlinale, the young talents have the opportunity to meet with international film professionals and casting directors, as well as participating in networking events.

European Film Promotion & Talent Platform
European Film Promotion (EFP) is the international network comprised of 38 European promotion organisations aiming to bolster European films and talent at the major markets and festivals, primarily outside Europe. SWISS FILMS is one of the ten founding members.

The Shooting Stars event (February 21–24, 2020) is an EFP programme geared towards promoting Europe’s young acting talents and is an important talent exchange for actresses and actors. The event has served as a springboard for the careers of many former Shooting Stars, such as for German actor Daniel Brühl, Swedish actress Alicia Vikander or the English actresses Carey Mulligan and Maisie Williams.

Swiss actresses and actors celebrated as Shooting Stars in Berlin in the past include Joel Basman, Carla Juri, Sven Schelker, Kacey Mottet Klein and, most recently in 2018, Luna Wedler.

Comments by the Shooting Stars Jury
“She is the heroine of 1,000 faces. That speaks 1,000 tongues. -– Almost. Whether in war-torn Bosnia or Freudian Vienna, among the cannibals of France or the outcasts of Berlin, Ella Rumpf always stands the test. The whole world is a stage for this chameleon-like performer that plays both her body and soul like instruments. Yet during all her journeys she displays one true, powerful identity. Like a mythical heroine.”

On behalf of the Swiss Federal Office of Culture, SWISS FILMS implements measures which bolster market opportunities and the visibility of Swiss film productions abroad. This review summarises the initial results for the year 2019.
