12.10.2009

Peter Liechti’s documentary film “The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy” has been honoured with the prestigious award of the European Film Academy Documentary Film 2009 – Prix Arte, as announced today by the Academy. The three-member jury selected the Swiss documentary film from 10 nominated films. Peter Liechti will attend the award ceremony of the 22nd European Film Awards in Bochum on December 12 to accept this esteemed award.
This year’s jury for the Documentary Film – Prix Arte was comprised of the following members: documentary filmmaker Nino Kartadzé from France/Georgia; Austrian producer and editor of ORF Franz Grabner; and the Russian documentary filmmaker Viktor Kossakovsky. The jury selected “The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy” for the award due to “ist skilful exploration of minimalistic means to create an extraordinary visual story between life and death.”

The award is a climax in the career of this discerning film, which is a personal rapprochement of a fictional text based on a true event. The final weeks of a man who committed suicide through self-imposed starvation in a forest are recounted in voice-over. “The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy” celebrated ist world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam last January and has since been selected for more than twelve well-known festivals. The film will continue to be screened at further international festivals around the world until the end of the year.

“The Sound of Insects – Record of a Mummy” has been running in cinemas in the German-speaking regions of Switzerland since September 24, 2009 (distribution: Look Now!).
