The Swiss Film Prize 2004 – More and more important

02.12.2003

Since 1998, the Swiss Film Prize has been awarded at the Solothurn Film Festival, which takes place in January every year. The national film prize, which honours exceptional achievements in Swiss films and promotes the film industry, will be awarding CHF 200,000 to the winners in each category and CHF 280,000 to the nominees. Outstanding films are awarded a prize in the categories of «Best Feature Film» (CHF 60,000), «Best Documentary Film» (CHF 60,000), and «Best Short Film» (CHF 30,000). Exceptional achievements in acting are honoured with prizes for «Best Performance in a Leading Role» and «Best Performance in a Supporting Role» (each CHF 15,000). The jury will present the awards, which, as of this year, also include a «Jury Prize» (CHF 20,000). The jury is comprised of experts from the cultural arts, film, and media. This year’s jury is presided over by musician and singer Stephan Eicher. Nominated for the «Best Feature Film» are: «Ready, Steady, Charlie!» by Mike Eschmann, which was a box-office hit in 2003 with over 500,000 admissions; «Au sud des nuages» by Jean-François Amiguet (screened in the international competition in Locarno, 2003); «Strong Shoulders» by Ursula Meier; «Little Girl Blue» by Anna Luif (both were screened at the World Film Festival in Montreal, 2003); and Dominique de Rivaz’s «Jagged Harmonies – Bach vs. Frederick II» (screened on the Piazza Grande in Locarno, 2003), in which two of the actors up for nomination can be seen: Anatole Taubman and Gilles Tschudi.

Five films in each category, as well as three actors/actresses from the two further categories, are nominated by a committee which has been selected by the Federal Department of Home Affairs. Approximately 100 films were up for nomination. The nominations for each fiction film and documentary film will be honoured with a sum of CHF 20,000, for each of the short films with a sum of CHF 10,000, and the nominated actresses/actors with a sum of CHF 5,000.

The changes in 2004 – the introduction of new categories and the award money for the nominations – have extended the Swiss Film Prize. In 1996, institutions in the film industry, which are still active today, took the initiative and combined the smaller awards and prizes that had existed at that time into a single national film prize: the Swiss Film Prize. It was awarded for the first time in 1998 in the categories of «Best Feature Film», «Best Documentary Film» and «Best Short Film». In 2000, the categories for «Best Actor» and «Best Actress» were added. As of 2005, an award for the «Best Animated Film» will be awarded every two years.

The Swiss Film Prize is under the auspices of the Federal Department of Home Affairs – represented by the Federal Office of Culture – in collaboration with the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG SSR idée Suisse), Swiss Films, the Solothurn Festival, the Nyon International Film Festival »Visions du Réel», and the Locarno International Film Festival. Swiss Films is responsible for the promotion of this national award. The support provided by the Swiss Broadcasting Corporation (SRG SSR idée Suisse) for the Swiss Film Prize is twofold: providing the sum awarded to the «Best Documentary Film» and broadcasting the presentation of the awards on national television in three languages.
