Three Swiss film productions have been nominated for the “Trophées Francophones du Cinéma”: the two fiction films “Sister” (L’enfant d’en haut) and “À perdre la raison”; as well as the animation film “La nuit de l’ours.” The award ceremony will be held in Dakar on June 29.

The organisers of the first edition of the “Trophées Francophones du Cinéma” event, which will take place in Dakar on June 18-29, 2013, announced the nominees in nine categories on June 10. Among the 45 films – five in each category – are the Swiss fiction films “Sister” by Ursula Meier and “À perdre la raison” by Belgian director Joachim Lafosse. Each film has a nomination in two different categories. The animation film “La nuit de l’ours” by Frédéric and Samuel Guillaume received a nomination in the Short Film category.

Films and actresses in the limelight
The box-office hit “Sister” – with a Silver Bear at the Berlinale 2012, three-time winner of the Swiss Film Award 2013, among others – is one of the five nominees in the running for an award in the Feature-Length Film category. Léa Seydoux, the French actress in the film’s leading role, has also received a nomination. Joachim Lafosse, director of the Belgian-French-Luxembourgian-Swiss film “À perdre la raison,” coproduced by Box Productions in Switzerland, is a nominee in the Director category. The Belgian actress in the leading role of his film, Emilie Dequenne, has received a nomination in the same category as Léa Seydoux.

Social exclusion recounted by animals
The 22-minute animation film “La nuit de l’ours” by brothers Frédéric and Samuel Guillaume has already been honoured with several awards: the Swiss Film Award 2013, two awards at the Fantoche Festival in Baden and the Animated Eye Award at the Aspen Shortsfest. The animals in the animation film portray people who were victims of social exclusion in Fribourg.

Promotion of francophone films
Following film screenings in cinemas for two weeks, the first “Trophées Francophones du Cinéma” will be presented at an award ceremony in Dakar on June 29. The aim of this event is to “place filmmaking from French-speaking countries in the spotlight.” SWISS FILMS, the promotion agency, had submitted four film productions and has provided support for the presence of the nominees in Senegalese capital city.
