The Swiss documentary film “Vol spécial” was honoured with two major awards at the Full Frame Festival in Durham, North Carolina (April 12-15, 2012). Competing against 57 films, Fernand Melgar’s film was selected as the winner of the Anne Dellinger Grand Jury Award and the Center for Documentary Studies Filmmaker Award. The Full Frame Festival is one of the most important festivals for documentary films in the USA. In the past it has honoured such cineastes as Marcel Ophüls or Nicolas Philibert.

The jury for the Anne Dellinger Award delivered the following statement: “Director Fernand Melgar takes us deep inside the world of detained immigrants in Switzerland. With incredible access and patient observation, we experience the complex and powerful relationships between the captives and their captors. An exceptional work of vérité filmmaking, “Vol spécial” forces us to confront the contradictions of humane incarceration.” The Center for Documentary Studies Filmmaker Award honors a documentary artist “whose work is a potential catalyst for education and change.

“Vol spécial,” which won the “Quartz 2012” for Best Documentary Film, has been screened at festivals all over the world and garnered fifteen awards until now. Fernand Melgar is currently accompanying a retrospective of his films, with support from SWISS FILMS. Following Bogotà and Medellin in Columbia, he will be the guest at the BAFICI in Buenos Aires, the most important film festival for independent filmmaking in Latin America. The tour continues thereafter in Ecuador, Chile and Peru.
