Two Swiss short films are among the 57 entries in the running for “Best Honorary Foreign Film” of the 36th Student Academy Awards, which will be awarded in Los Angeles on June 13, 2009. The film “Ich träume nicht auf deutsch” by Ivana Lalovic was submitted by the Zurich University of Arts (ZHdK); the film “Polar” de Michael Koch was submitted by the Academy of Media Art Cologne (KHM).
The 15-minute short film “Ich träume nicht auf Deutsch” was the only Swiss film production invited to participate in the short film competition (“Corto cortissimo”) at the Venice Film Festival last September. Since then it has been screened at numerous festivals and won the Zurich Film Prize (Short Film Prize of the City of Winterthur), before being nominated for the Swiss Film Prize QUARTZ 2009 in March.

The 29-minute film “Polar” celebrated ist premiere at the International Short Film Festival Winterthur, where it was honoured with the award for “Best Swiss Short Film” (in a tie with “Second Me” by Anna Thommen). It was also awarded an Honourable Mention by the jury of the “Perspektive Deutsches Kino” competition at the Berlinale. Two previous films by Michael Koch “Wir sind dir treu" and “Beckenrand” had already garnered a great deal of interest at international film festivals.

Last year the Swiss film director Reto Caffi won the “Honorary Foreign Film Award” for his short film “Auf der Strecke”, before also being nominated for an Oscar for Best Short Film in January 2009.
