Sobras is the Portuguese word for the cloth cuttings that seamstresses usually discard. It is also the title of the last collection of photographs by Geraldo de Barros (1923-1998), one of Brazil's pioneers of experimental photography and also one of the most important artists in the constructivist movement. This film illustrates the artist's creative approach by means of a stimulating dialogue between the past and the present, comparing the trajectories of a man and of his country. The key idea in this film is the act of presentation, “because a negative that has been found scratched and dusty, if it produces a good photographic result, belongs to the person who uses it and no longer to the person who first exposed the film”. The film adopts the same approach to the presentation of the artist so that it too becomes the vestige, “a remnant” of an existing story.
