London's Tate Modern was opened for the first time on 12 May 2000 as a division of the
celebrated Tate Gallery. English architects were not especially delighted to see such a prestigious contract awarded to a foreign firm. In the end however what the Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron managed to do with this abandoned power station has almost without exception enchanted other professionals as well as the general public of art lovers.
Il 12 maggio 2000 ha avuto luogo l'inaugurazione della Tate Modern, nuova divisione della Tate Gallery. La comunità degli architetti inglesi non era certo scoppiata di gioia alla notizia che l'incarico di progettare il nuovo museo era stato dato ad architetti stranieri. Ma ciò che gli svizzeri Herzog & de Meuron hanno fatto di una centrale elettrica abbandonata gli è valso un coro di elogi unanime, da parte di professionisti ed amatori dell'arte.
