A small town between a lake and the mountains. One day Maria, who works in a shop, is told that she will bear a child although she is a virgin. Joseph, the proprietor of a carpenter's workshop, is told just as mysteriously that he is to look after Maria. The film describes the events related in the New Testament, at the same time giving them a present-day setting. The emotional and psychological make-up of the woman and the destiny of the man/woman relationship are the central themes. Joy, love, freedom, work and longing are the concepts which the film traces and whose deeper meaning is revealed and presented for comparison with the viewer's own experiences.
