Claude Goretta depicts both Sartre’s life and his philosophical, literary and political commitments. He retraces the great moments of his biography, which was shaped by exceptional encounters and romances. Beyond the portrait of a remarkable man, the film focuses on a time of upheaval and change, from the return to power of de Gaulle in 1958, to Sartre’s refusal of the Nobel Prize for literature in 1964. With a powerful sense of realism, the filmmaker renders the tensions of this stormy era palpable, with all the hopes, the struggles and the illusions that were to lead to the 1968 revolution.
