Lætitia Leonce, an 11-year-old half-caste, is a happy child despite the recent death of her mother, being given all the love and admiration she could possibly desire by her half-brother Michel, her half-sister Carole and her grandmother. Novak, Lætitia’s new teacher, would like to put on a show, and to use aspects of Lætitia’s life story as the main theme. The child is delighted, but Michel is violently opposed to his little sister’s participation in the show, as he does not want to have anything to do with whites. Although Carole feels more or less the same way about whites, she is nonetheless willing to acknowledge the human qualities of Novak. Too young to understand the absolute refusal of her brother, Lætitia, swims away in anger in the direction of Diamond Rock, at the risk of her life. Will Novak manage to save her?
