I was born in 1878. But don’t tell anyone. I was born Swiss. But please, don’t mention that either. Say rather that I was born in Vaud, a part of Savoy with a long history, which shares the traditions of the langue d’oc of southern France and the banks of the Rhone, not far from the river’s source. C. F. Ramuz’s invention of “spoken literature” earns him a place among great 20th century authors. “What will people be reading in the year 2000? Not much more than Barbusse, Paul Morand, Ramuz and myself…” opined the author Louis-Ferdinand Céline, with no attempt at modesty.
