Born in Bex in the 19th century and co-author of the Atlas of the Flora of Vaud, Henri Pittier is little known in Switzerland. However, he is very well known in Central America, where he spent most of his life. From Costa Rica to Venezuela via Panama, traces of this naturalist and avant-garde explorer can be found in botanical archives, on peaks covered with primary forest, in current topographical surveys and even on the banks of the Panama Canal.
