During a raid on a left wing youth centre, biogeneticist Hoffmann is shot in the head, losing his memory and ability to speak. Forced to build up a second existence from scratch, Hoffmann embarks on a laborious process of physical an mental recovery as he searches for the truth about the incident and for his identity and position in a society in which he is instrumentalised by the one side as a "terrorist" and by the other as "a victim of police terror".
