Today, at over 60 years of age, writer Siri Hustvedt says she is finally old enough to give her anger at the discrimination against women in science, psychoanalysis and art the attention it deserves. Women should not be deterred from asking the right questions in male-dominated domains, she believes. Fear and shame are their greatest enemies. The beautiful face of a young woman acts as an obstacle to her seriousness, writes Siri Hustvedt in her 2019 novel The Age of Innocence. The film portrays a woman who has dedicated her life and work to exploring “femininity” in all its facets and variations. Accordingly, the film starts from the personal and ends with the universal: the eternal battle of the sexes – and the individual position that each person must work out for themselves.
