Three Swiss world premieres at the Croisette

At this year's Cannes Film Festival (May 16-27, 2023), three Swiss films will celebrate their world premieres in three different sections; LA CHIMERA is selected for the prestigious Competition.

LA CHIMERA by Italian director Alice Rohrwacher is an Italian-French-Swiss coproduction with Ticino-based Amka Films Productions (Michela Pini, Amel Soudani, Olga Lamontanara). World rights are handled by sales company The Match Factory.

LA CHIMERA is the fourth film by Alice Rohrwacher for which Amka Films Productions has collaborated with the Italian production company Tempesta. Following THE WONDERS (2014) and HAPPY AS LAZZARO (2018), it is their third coproduction of a film directed by Rohrwacher to screen in the Competition of Cannes’ Official Selection.

The film stars Josh O'Conner, best known as Prince Charles from THE CROWN, Isabella Rossellini and Alba Rohrwacher, among others. Set in the 1980s in the world of the "Tombaroli" tomb raiders, the film tells the story of a young English archaeologist who becomes involved in the illegal trafficking of antique artefacts.

For the production company 8horses, Michela Pini as is also producing ELECTRIC CHILD by Simon Jaquemet (CHRIEG, THE INNOCENT). The film will be presented as a work-in-progress in the frame of the Frontières platform at the Cannes Film Market.

Two world premieres in the Quinzaine and ACID Cannes sections.

BLACKBIRD, BLACKBIRD, BLACKBERRY by Elene Naveriani is selected for the Quinzaine des Cinéastes section. Like Naveriani's last film WET SAND, the film was shot in Georgia with Georgian actress Eka Chavleishvili. Geneva-based Alva Film Production (Thomas Reichlin, Britta Rindelaub) coproduced BLACKBIRD, BLACKBIRD, BLACKBERRY with Takes Film, Tbilisi and Heimatfilm, Cologne. World rights are handled by Totem Films, Paris.

In the ACID Cannes program, curated by the Association of Independent Filmmakers and presenting nine films, Swiss director Maxime Rappaz celebrates the world premiere of his first feature-length film LAISSEZ-MOI. It stars French actress Jeanne Balibar and up-and-coming Swiss talent Pierre-Antoine Dubey in his first major film role.

LAISSEZ-MOI was produced by GoldenEggProduction, Carouge (Yan Decoppet and Gabriela Bussmann) with French Paraiso Production and the Belgian production company Fox the Fox.

The promotion agency SWISS FILMS is participating at the Cannes Film Market with the Pavillon suisse at the Village international. An update on the Swiss films and talents in Cannes as well as on the activities of SWISS FILMS in the context of the Cannes Film Festival will follow at the beginning of May.
