Peter Liechti’s “The Sound of Insects” at Hot Docs Festival in Toronto

28.04.2009

Peter Liechti will represent Switzerland at the 16th Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival in Toronto (April 30-May 10, 2009) with his film “The Sound of Insects: Record of a Mummy”. Following the world premiere of the film at the International Film Festival Rotterdam and, at present, its participation in the competition at the Visions du Réel film festival in Nyon, this marks the third prominent screening of the film, which is extraordinary in terms of both content and form.
“The Sound of Insects” is an 88-minute film for the cinema which portrays the suicide of a man by self-imposed starvation and depicts the director’s personal rapprochement of a fictional text, which is based on a true event. The journal of the deceased man is read in voice-over, lending the narration a key role. In the English version of the film, the journal is read by the Swiss-Canadian director Peter Mettler, in the German version by the actor Alexander Tschernek. In conjunction with the film’s premiere in Rotterdam, SWISS FILMS published an updated version of the ”Ciné-Portraits” monograph on Peter Liechti.

The Hot Docs Festival was founded in 1993 by independent documentary filmmakers from Canada and ranks among the most important documentary film festivals in North America today. Together with competitions for Canadian and international documentary films, Hot Docs organises a film market, coproduction meetings as well as a diverse number of seminars for the some 2,000 film professionals from all over the world attending the festival.
