This year the 24th Internationale Kurzfilmtage Winterthur (November 3-8, 2020) will be held in hybrid form for the first time. Of the 20 films in the Swiss Competition, five short film productions have also been selected for screening in the International Competition. Collectively, more than 40 short films from Switzerland await discovery during this year’s festival. As an event partner of the Industry Lab SWISS FILMS, has organised an online think tank on the topic of sustainable film promotion and a digital preview featuring selected Swiss short film productions as work-in-progress.

Among the Swiss short films screened in both the International and the Swiss Competition is Roman Hodel’s THE GAME. The documentary film told from the perspective of a football referee celebrated its world premiere in Venice and was subsequently screened at the Toronto International Film Festival TIFF. In TRACES, director Pablo Briones, whose first feature film BARACOA was screened at the Berlinale 2019, portrays an undocumented domestic worker living in Geneva for over 20 years.

Celebrating their premieres in the Swiss Competition are DARWIN’S NOTEBOOK by Georges Schwizgbel, the doyen of Swiss animation film, as well as YOUR STREET, Güzin Kar’s first short film in about 20 years.

At the Swiss Film School Day, Switzerland’s five most important will present their current short film Bachelor programme to an international jury.

Under specific conditions, the competitions of the International Kurzfilmtage Winterthur are eligible for a nomination for an OSCAR®, the BAFTA Award, the European Film Award and the Swiss Film Award.

SWISS FILMS is an event partner of the Industry Lab, the networking platform for the international short film industry. SWISS FILMS will host an online think tank addressing the topic of “How to promote green and sustainable?” on Friday, November 6. The following experts will participate: Ronny Fritsche (Environmental Strategist Film i Väst, Sweden); Dr. Bettina Kahlert (myclimate Foundation, Switzerland); Prof. Solange Ghernaouti (director of Swiss cybersecurity Advisory & Research Group, UNIL, Switzerland); Arna Marie Bersaas (Norwegian Film Institute); Mark Olexa (director/producer Dok Mobile, Switzerland). Even in digital times, SWISS FILMS and the International Kurzfilmtage Winterthur are committed to bringing filmmakers and festivals together. To ensure that personal matchmaking is not neglected, 1:1 online meetings between Swiss filmmakers and international festival delegates will be arranged for three days (November 5-7).

Furthermore, this year marks the third time SWISS FILMS will present a preview at the festival, featuring four short film productions as work-in-progress together with the directors and producers. The preview offers festival delegates, sales and festival agents the exclusive opportunity to discover new short films from Switzerland online.
