The European Film Academy is presently compiling the list of 30 European films which will be announced as the nominees for the European Film Prize 2000 at the beginning of November. The presentation of the European Film Awards takes place in Paris this year on 2. December. The Swiss contenders are Alain Tanner’s latest film "Jonas et Lila, à demain" and from Ticino, Silvio Soldini's "Pane e tulipani", which has also been submitted by Italy.
As a member of the Association of European Film Promotion Agencies (EFP), the Swiss Film Center has submitted "Jonas et Lila, à demain", the latest work of the Genevan maestro, for nomination to the European Film Awards. Italia Cinema, which is also a member of the EFP, has submitted Silvio Soldini's "Pane e tulipani". Silvio Soldini holds Swiss and Italian citizenship and resides in Milan. One of the protagonists of his film is, in addition to Licia Maglietta, the Swiss actor Bruno Ganz.

Since 1997, the European Film Academy has organised the annual presentation of the European Film Awards in a different European metropolis each year. At the beginning of November, the members of the Academy - prominent representatives of the film industry from all over Europe - will select the candidates for the prizes to be awarded in the various categories. The awards, which are determined by secret ballot, will be presented at the Théâtre de l’Odéon in Paris on 2. December. Among the approximately 800 members of the European Film Academy are Swiss directors Claude Goretta, Markus Imhoof and Daniel Schmid, the film producer Ruth Waldburger, as well as actors Bruno Ganz and Martin Rapold.
