Deuxième volet d'une trilogie consacrée à l'existence des agriculteurs à la fin du XXe siècle. Il aborde les questions de l'identité, de la survie et de l'avenir. C'est l'époque de la libéralisation explosive du commerce mondial. Le film traite de la survie de l'agriculture lors du passage d'une économie planifiée dirigée par l'État à une économie de marché. La plupart des agriculteurs misent sur le progrès technique et l'élevage intensif pour survivre dans cette nouvelle situation de marché. Beaucoup ne peuvent pas suivre le rythme et abandonnent.
