Foreign distribution promoted for six Swiss films

29.10.2009

The theatrical releases of the Swiss fiction films “Die Standesbeamtin” by Micha Lewinsky and “Tandoori Love” by Oliver Paulus in Germany, as well as “Home” by Ursula Meier in the United States will be supported with financial contributions totaling 62'500 Euro (76,200 CHF). The distribution companies in France of Swiss documentaries “Letter to Anna” by Eric Bergkraut and “Au loin des villages” by Olivier Zuchuat, as well as “The Sounds of Insects” by Peter Liechti in Poland receive an additional amount totalling 18’900 Euro (28’500 CHF). In a second round of funding allocations in October, the committee responsible granted export promotions for these six films to foreign distributors. With this tool, SWISS FILMS – in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Office of Culture – increases the likelihood for the films’ successes abroad.

Since 2007, SWISS FILMS has promoted the export of Swiss films and majority co-productions for theatrical distribution abroad. A total of 350,000 CHF are available to support export projects. Foreign distributors, which bring Swiss films to movie screens, will receive a total of 25,000 Euro (40,000 CHF) per film and per country. Distributors from MEDIA member countries have priority for receiving grants, while the funding cannot be combined with other MEDIA contributions.

Members of the “Utilization and Diversity” committee, presided over by Carola Stern are: Frank Braun (movie theatre Riff Raff, Zurich), Laurent Dutoit (Agora Films, Genf), and Cyril Thursten (Xenix Film Distribution, Zurich). SWISS FILMS and the Swiss Federal Office of Culture serve in an advisory role. In 2009 the grants are awarded in three rounds (April, October, December).
