International distribution for five Swiss films is granted

16.12.2008

The fiction film “Un autre homme” will be released in cinemas in France and in Québec, “Home” in Italy, “Luftbusiness” in Taiwan and “Vitus” in Greece. The documentary film “Chrigu” will also appear in cinemas in France. In its fourth round of allocations for the year 2008, the expert commission granted foreign distribution companies an export subsidy amounting to a total of 82,000 euros (130,000 CHF) for five Swiss films in December. With this instrument, SWISS FILMS – in collaboration with the Swiss Federal Office of Culture – increases the chances of success for Swiss film productions abroad.

SWISS FILMS has fostered the export of Swiss film productions and majority co-productions with regard to releases in foreign cinemas since 2007. The annual budget allotted for this purpose amounts to 300,000 CHF. Foreign distribution companies who promote the release of Swiss films in cinemas receive a maximum of 25,000 euros (40,000 CHF) per film and subsidised country. Distributors from the MEDIA member countries are favoured. Grants cannot be accumulated with the MEDIA selective-support measures.

The members of the “Film Release and Diversity” expert commission, presided over by Carola Stern, include: Frank Braun (Kino Riff Raff, Zurich), Laurent Dutoit (Agora Films, Geneva) and Cyril Thurston (Xenix Film Distribution, Zurich). SWISS FILMS and the Swiss Federal Office of Culture have an advisory function. Allocation of the subsidies is scheduled four times throughout the year: in March, June, September and December.
