They are 7, 19, 27, 46 and 65 years old, and have one thing in common – they live at 15, rue des Bains. An unexpected event throws their neighbourly relations into disarray and binds them ineluctably: Following the death of the building's owner, Madeleine Berger, they discover to their surprise that they have inherited the apartments they are occupying. Thrilled by the good news, they are soon confounded to learn the condition placed on the inheritance: Madame Berger wishes to be incinerated outdoors according to Hindu rites. And to make matters worse, a race against time ensues between the tenants and the late Madame Berger's distant niece, the only legal heir and very much in debt. The drastic degree of the situation reveals the true character of each, like an ultimate kick in an already-agitated anthill. Life in all of its aspects.
