Adriana, Mother Superior in a convent of Poor Clares, has all the appearances of a very spiritual woman, her life divided between silence and prayer. A project to renovate the ancient convent changes all this however. Mother Adriana interprets the event as a sign from a higher power. She decides to lend her authority to the engineer in charge of the project, Dario Padovani, and to open the convent to the world outside. Her relationship with Dario deepens. When the ecclesiastical authorities object to the plan to open up the convent, Adriana begins to have serious doubts about the life she has been leading, about her faith and her true feelings. Deeply troubled, she decides to leave the convent. Equally unsatisfied with her “second” life although in her own way she loves Dario, Adriana decides to abandon all those nearest to her and to leave town in search of her true identity.
Adriana, madre superiora di un convento di clarisse cappuccine, sembra essere una persona di grande spiritualità. La sua vita è tutta silenzio e preghiere. Ma la ristrutturazione del vecchio convento scombussolerà la sua esistenza. Madre Adriana vede nei lavori di restauro il «segno» di una volontà superiore. E con Dario Padovani, l’ingegnere incaricato del progetto, lotta affinché il convento venga aperto al mondo reale. Il suo rapporto con Dario diventa più profondo. Quando le autorità ecclesiastiche si oppongono al progetto di apertura, madre Adriana comincia ad interrogarsi sul proprio passato, sulla propria fede, sui propri sentimenti. Dilaniata dal dubbio, decide di lasciare il convento. Ma la sua «seconda» vita non la convince. Pur amando Dario a modo suo, Adriana decide di abbandonare tutto, la relazione, la famiglia e la città per partire alla ricerca della sua vera identità.
