The subject of Murer’s film portrait is the designer of the extraterrestrial in 2069, his friend H.R. Giger. This film represents noticeable technological progress in Murer’s work: all material is shot with direct sound, the sound mixing is more subtle, the lighting more subdued, and not only to comply with the standards of the TV co-producer. Once again, the subject is not an artificial world, but Giger’s private world and history, going back to the nightmares of his childhood. In its opening scenes, the film races through numerous passages (in both senses of the word) in Giger’s past and present – ghost train, tunnel trip, scaling a mountain top in wind and darkness – before coming almost to a halt in a series of enigmatic views: staircases, cellars, corridors, vessels, openings, tubes, doors.
