The country is perfectly organized from top to bottom; a Big Brother controls and keeps a record of every inhabitant’s every step. Citizens can and should use the countless telephone booths (‘Brain Corners’) to maintain periodic contact with the ‘Brain Centre’. Nothing unexpected can happen. Even the sell-by dates of all food is registered, and a warning system is in place. This ‘brave new world’ receives a visit from an extraterrestrial being that records everything in sound and image. Instead of focusing on progress in rational social engineering, this ‘alien’ (designed by H.R. Giger) is interested in the few marginalized creatures who have succeeded in eluding control. When Big Brother captures the alien and has his camera and tape-recorder – head and heart – removed, the world collapses in thunder and lightning. The marginals, however, manage to get hold of a boat and sail over the lake towards the horizon, where a person stands holding up a white flag with all his strength in the apocalyptic storm.
