In the spring of 1999, shortly after the Chinese embassy in Belgrade was bombed, the French-Vietnamese Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh accompanied by the Buddhist nun Chan Khong travelled to China. As part of a delegation of 182 people from 16 nations, they visited a rebuilt Chinese Zen monastery at the invitation of the Buddhist Association of China. The political situation was not particularly favourable at the time. Indeed in view of the aggressively anti-Western popular mood that prevailed at the time of the visit it was feared that there might be physical attacks against members of the delegation. The film shows meetings with various Chinese cultural groups. However differences of interpretation, of experience and indeed of fundamental outlook made it difficult to achieve any mutual understanding. Whereas the Chinese monks practise Zen in search of enlightment, Thich Nhat Hanh teaches that the way is itself enlightenment, as practised openly in normal daily relations. The film seeks to capture images that reveal the inner workings of the spirit, and the search for greater openness on both sides.
