What conclusion can one safely reach on the death of the young apprentice Bertrand Perrier? Inspector Jean-Marc Léon doubts that it was accidental. But for various reasons he is in no position to carry out the inquiry himself. So Léon calls in a private investigator, Marie Machiavelli. Herself a law school graduate, Marie arranges to be taken on as an apprentice by the same law firm for which Bertrand had been working. She discovers that the firm’s fortune is built on money entrusted to its care by Jews who were destined to perish in Nazi prison camps. The father of the current head of the firm failed to return the money at the end of the war. But what has this to do with the death of young Bertrand Perrier? With the secret collaboration of Inspector Léon, Marie does her best to solve the mystery.
