As a traffic policeman, Arnold Odermatt ardently took photographs of the aftermath of automobile accidents, of his colleagues at work and of his family on Sunday outings. With an exacting eye, he granted the scrap metal sculptures centre stage in his photographs. In a similarly reticent fashion, he captured everyday life of the police or his family. His works are characterised by sobriety and authenticity. In 2001 Harald Szeemann exhibited the photos at the Biennale, thereby assisting the photographer Arnold Odermatt to achieve his breakthrough on the international art scene.
