Richard R. Ernst was a chemist at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich. In 1991 he received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his pioneering contributions to the development of high-resolution nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy NMR. Among other things, this is the basis for the MRI diagnostic device used in medicine. Shortly before his death in early June 2021, Ernst looks back on his life, tells how his Nobel Prize came about and what it meant to him.
