Born in Belarus in 1893, Salman Luban, the director's grandfather, completed his medical studies in Switzerland, where, as a young doctor, in 1917, in the midst of war and the Spanish flu epidemic, he was sent by the Red Cross to Val Calanca, an isolated valley in the Swiss Italian-speaking part of Grigioni. Salman Luban remained in that beautiful and inaccessible valley until he died in 1954, never again seeing his native land. The documentary is an intimate portrait of a mountain doctor, and at the same time, it tells of a world of medical practice that has now disappeared.
